Brian Beckner scored his first win of the 2009 season in the Boss Snow Equipment Pony Stock division, at the Spartan Speedway, on Friday, June 5th. Starting in the 12th position, B. Beckner had a lot of ground to cover and on the last three laps, battled his brother, Wayne Beckner Jr., for the win. The field bunched up after the green flag flew and ran in a pack for the first three laps, sometimes three- and four-wide. George Wyers took the lead from Brad Harbenski with Joe Bates issuing a challenge on lap three. Bates moved into first on lap six, as Rich Roberts joined the fight. Back in the pack, B. Beckner was methodically picking off cars, making his way to the front. On lap nine, it was Bates, Roberts, Wyers, Edson Rowley III, and B. Beckner as the top five. Bates continued to lead as Beckner picked off Roberts, and challenged for the lead after caution waved when Rowley and Roberts got together. Beckner took the lead on lap 16 but wasn’t alone. W. Beckner Jr. tacked himself on his brother’s bumper and the two went at it for the remaining three laps. Todd Metz Jr. and Patrick Denison made late race runs to the front, and at the checker, it was B. Beckner, W. Beckner Jr., Metz Jr., Patrick Denison, and Bates as the top five. Bates and Lex Jarecki won their heats.
The Spartan Speedway Pure Stock division may have been small in numbers, but they put on a great show. Matt Childers jumped out to the lead, as Justin Lewis, Ian Schafer, Mark Carson, Jordan Lechota and Jake Pearson all battled for position. Schafer moved into second around Lewis to challenge Childers for first, as Lechota made his way to the front. Lechota made the pass on Schafer on lap seven, Childers bobbled on lap eight, opening the door for Lechota to slip into first. It was a battle royale for position for the remainder of the eleven laps, but at the stripe, it was Lechota, Childers, Schafer, Pearson, and Lewis. Lechota also won the heat.
The Andrew’s Chevrolet Super Late Models ran their caution-riddled 40 lap feature, as caution waved 10 times during the event. A great race for the lead shaped up between Phil Bozell and Jimmy Gallagher after the green flag was displayed. Jon McNett sat in third and jumped to his signature outside line to take the lead on lap seven. P. Bozell and Gallagher duked it out for second as McNett pulled away from the field with Gallagher taking second on lap ten. Caution waved for a spin involving Andy Bozell in fifth and Chad Finley in fourth. Both were sent to the rear of the field, moving Dave Stehouwer and Donny Ritter into the top five. Caution waved on the restart, and again on lap sixteen and once under green, McNett picked up where he left off, checking out on the field, leaving Gallagher, P. Bozell and Stehouwer to fight it out amongst themselves by lap 20. This three car battle raged on through lap 32 when A. Bozell joined the trio, just as Stehouwer moved around P. Bozell for third. A. Bozell followed Stehouwer through to sit in fourth. A. Bozell jumped to the outside of Stehouwer and took away third, as well as making short work of Gallagher to sit in second. A. Bozell went to work, reeling in McNett but couldn’t make the pass before laps ran out. At the line, it was McNett, A. Bozell, Stehouwer, Gallagher, and P. Bozell. Walt Obrinske Jr. and P. Bozell scored wins in their heats.
The Performance NW Sportsmans lined up for their 25-lap feature, with Matt Kirchen taking the early lead over Dane Long and Jimmy Scavarda. Long went to the outside of Kirchen for the lead, while Damon Place charged into second from his sixth starting position on lap three. Scavarda and Ron Heeney jumped into the mix, with Heeney taking away the second spot on lap 11. Scavarda went to work on Place for third, but couldn’t get it done. After 25 laps, it was Long, Heeney, Place, Scavarda, and Kirchen as the top five. Long tallied the heat win for the division as well.
Bubba Brooks took a commanding lead in the Valvoline Instant Oil Change 35-lap Modified feature, leaving Ron Parish and Bud Perry to duke it out for second. Parish was able to put a bit of distance between Perry and himself on lap 11, but caution on lap 12 closed up the field, effectively wiping out Brooks’ and Parish’s advantages. On the restart, Perry got a run on the outside of Parish, taking away second, as Brooks pulled away from him to hold onto first. Leroy Ellis, Wayne Haughton, and Earl Miles had a battle of their own going on, with Ellis breaking away to challenge Perry for second. Perry got a good run on Brooks on lap 19 and took the lead on lap 20, while Ellis took a look under Brooks as caution came out. Perry, Brooks, and Ellis ran one, two and three on the restart. Ellis moved into second but couldn’t reel in Perry for the win. At the checker, it was Perry, Ellis, Brooks, Haughton and Miles. Nyle Weiler, Ken Buchner and Haughton won their heats.
