The Auto Value Bumper to Bumper Legends Series made a stop at the Spartan Speedway to help kick off a Memorial Day racing weekend. Chance Rice, current points leader of the Legend series, led the 30-lap feature from flag to flag, posting another hash mark in the win column. Bryan Nuckles and Levi Rouster tacked themselves on to Rice’s bumper, but were unable to work their way around Rice. Rice was able to pull away from the duo on the straightaways, but they had great runs through the corners and were able to keep stride with the leader. Chris Perry was able to keep the lead trio in his sights from fourth place, while Matt Todd drove to a respectable top five finish. After 30-laps, it was Rice, Nuckles, Rouster, Perry and Todd. Rouster, Perry, and Nuckles won their heats.
MCR Dwarf driver, "Jumpin" Junior Gould indeed jumped out to a commanding lead as soon as that green flag waved, with the pack running three-wide going into turn two and coming down the back stretch. Gould soon had company, as Craig Curtis charged to the front from the high-side, falling in behind Gould for second. Chad Goff made his presence known, quickly working his way up through the field into third. Eric Hoffman caught the lead pack and fell in line behind Goff. Goff and Curtis battled for the second position, side-by-side, with Curtis running the high groove. With three laps to go, Goff dove to the low side of Gould, while Curtis drove past Gould on the outside. Goff took away the top spot, followed by Curtis, as Gould fell back to third. Mike McManman Sr. and Eric Hoffman rounded out the top five. Rick Ayers and Gould each tallied heat wins.
The Valvoline Instant Oil Change Modified division saw Charlotte’s Bill Butler take a trip to the Corrigan Oil Winner’s Circle, after having led 32 laps of the 35-lap feature. Okemos’ Ron Parish jumped out to lead after the green flag waved, but Butler went to work on Parishes bumper, jumped to the low side, and the duo ran side-by-side for a number of laps. Butler was able to break away from the pack, leaving Parish, Holt’s Trei Deubel, and Lansing’s Chris Ozanich to battle for second. Ozanich was the eventual winner of the duel, with Vermontville’s Leroy Ellis and Corunna’s Larry Wallace making their way around Parish as well. At the line, it was Butler, Ozanich, Ellis, Wallace, and Parish. Ozanich and Parish each scored heat wins.
Non-qualifier, Jon McNett, of Dewitt, experienced mechanical problems in the early stages of the racing program, but managed to put that behind him, and put his Andrews Chevrolet Super Late Model in the Corrigan Winner’s Circle with a run away victory. The second place finisher, Holt’s Gary Sherman also had mechanical issues during qualifying and the heat, but managed to hold off the advances of Lansing’s Doug Finley, as Finley was all over Sherman’s bumper. Muskegon’s Dave Stehouwer had run the majority of the 40-laps in the third spot, but fell back as laps wound down. Dimondale’s Jimmy Gallagher moved into the fourth spot ahead of Stehouwer to finish in the fourth spot. At the line, it was McNett, Sherman, Finley, Gallagher, and Stehouwer.
