?Smokin? Bud Perry scored a win in the WMMQ Classic Rock 94.9 MI Modified division, Friday, Aug. 11th. Twenty-six mods timed in, making it necessary to run a 12-lap consi, with the top four spots transferring to the feature. Maynard Bigelow Jr., Mike Piette, Tom Williams, and Wayne Haughton made the show, but had to be content starting at the rear of the field. Bill Butler and Jim Kennedy brought the field down for the green flag, with Butler number one on the leader board after the first lap. Butler continued to lead, with Ken Buchner, and Matt Schindewolf trying to hold off Brian Heeney and Perry Davenport. Caution flew on lap five, and on the restart, Heeney made his way around Schindewolf, and then Buchner by lap seven. Davenport and Leroy Ellis found their preferred line to be in the second groove, and made their charge to the front. At lap thirteen, Heeney and Butler, and Buchner and Davenport were running side by side, battling for position. Davenport grabbed third from Buchner, but Butler was able to hold Heeney off until lap sixteen. Bud Perry had been methodically picking off cars, one at a time, both inside and outside, until he was sitting in fifth. He picked off Buchner, bringing Dan Loughan along with him, as Butler relinquished the top spot to Heeney. The restart, after a lap seventeen spin, Davenport went to work on Butler, as Perry jumped to the high side, trying to get a run on both Davenport and Butler. Mission accomplished on lap twenty, then Perry set his sights on Heeney, and began reeling him in. Lap twenty-five saw Perry outside of Heeney for the lead, with Davenport keeping pace with Heeney. Davenport brought out the caution as he slowed coming out of turn three. Perry?s lead was diminished, setting up a five lap shootout. Perry drove away from the field on the restart, leaving Heeney, Butler, Loughan, and Ellis to sort out second through fifth. Larry Wallace grabbed fifth away from Ellis, with Earl Miles in tow, on lap thirty-two. At the line, it was Perry, Heeney, Butler, Loughan, and Wallace.
Gilbert Little, Bigelow Jr., and Heeney grabbed heat wins.
Fourteen Andrews Chevrolet Super Late Models got a leg up on the August 18th ?Chargin? Charlie? Ryan Memorial Race (featuring a complete invert). Doug Finley set the bar high in qualifying, and by virtue of his 13.071, he started at the tail end of the field. Carl Sodman and Bob Bauer sat on the front row, and at the drop of the green, Bauer jumped into the lead ahead of Doc Dutton and Sodman. Bauer continued to open up his lead, as Stan Perry and Jimmy Gallagher battled for the second position. Evan Barrett held down the fourth spot, as Chris Place took over fifth from Dutton. Caution on lap eleven, for Dutton, was the last thing Bauer wanted to see. Finley grabbed the outside line on the restart and catapulted his way around Place and Barrett, into fourth. Finley went to work on Gallagher, as Perry went to work on Bauer for first. Gallagher made the high side work for him, as he drove into the lead around Perry and Bauer. Caution on lap twenty-three, gave Finley the chance he was looking for. He got around Bauer on the restart and went after Gallagher for first. By lap thirty, it was Gallagher and Finley going at it for the top spot, as Jon McNett and Perry scrapped over third. McNett put some distance between Perry and himself, while Perry ran away from Bauer in fifth. Finley tried every trick in the book, but couldn?t get around Gallagher in the closing laps. At the stripe, it was Gallagher, Finley, McNett, Perry, and Bauer. Dutton and Perry won their heats.
Even in Dane Long?s absence, the yellow 7L truck kept rolling along. Jon McNett pulled double-duty and drove the truck into the Winner?s Circle for the Performance Automotive Street Stock division. The win wasn?t without its share of lumps though. Jeremy Lutz, transplant to the division from the Springport Motor Speedway, and Al Williams, led the field down for the start. Lutz led lap one, with Corey Davis making the move into first on lap two. Bubber Patrick challenged for the lead on lap three, with Ron Heeney right on his bumper. Heeney took over the second spot on lap five and moved into first, over Davis, on lap nine. Heeney built up a good lead over Davis, as Jack Koone Jr. and McNett jumped into the thick of things. Caution flew on lap sixteen as Koone got into Davis. Heeney took off like a shot on the restart, while McNett moved to the outside of Davis for second. Lap twenty-two saw Heeney and McNett running side by side, with McNett edging Heeney for the lead on lap twenty-three. Heeney brought out the caution and was sidelined, opening up the door for McNett. At the conclusion, it was McNett, Davis, Nate Moon, Damon Place (fast qualifier), and Scott Sigman. Patrick and Heeney took home heat wins.
Brent McCort showed the way for the first eight laps of the Holiday Powersports Pony Stock 20-lap feature. Bo Smith and George Wyers were in hot pursuit, with Jimmy Scavarda and John Conory making their way up through the pack. Scavarda took over the lead on lap ten, after Smith, McCort, and Scavarda ran three-wide on the backstretch. Conroy continued his drive to the front, sitting in second by lap fifteen, but it was too little, too late as Scavarda cruised to another win. Conroy, John Ward, Wyers, and McCort rounded out the top five.
Newcomer, Bill Atkins, walked away with a Pure Stock division win over Wayne Parkhurst II, Bryan Passick Sr., and Jared Roy.
