frame Xing

In the rule book it says no X frames Could you xplain what makes the frame a x frame? I just purchesd a sportman car and it has a x running under the car connecting the frame rails I need to know if I have to remove this also if running a single exhaust does the last 6" have to be 2.5" or just if your running duals? Hi Matt,

Ignore the 2.5 inch exhaust rule in the Sportsman section. That was supposed to have been removed and wasn't. That's a RWD Pure Stock rule. It will get edited out in the next revision within the next few days.

As for the X frame rule, I'll wait and let Chuck explain that as he can probably explain it better than I can.

An X frame is a frame GM used in the 1960's, Impala, rivera, buicks, cadiilacs,,,,

IF These X frames were legal then some could build one and it would be an OFF SET LM TYPE Chassis. I will try and find a picture of and x frame.

here is link wit pics of a impala frame, if someone were to cut out a section in the middle to shorten the wheel base from 119 to 105, then add a left frame rail of 2 x 3 tubing,,,,instant OFFSET chassis Laughing

I think your referriing to the welded bars added to stock perimeter frames that help strengthen the frames ?. In the sportsmen class that is all right. Any other questions please feel free to contact me at [chuck@corriganoil.com]

Matt,

A word of advice on "Xing" your chassis. The phrase "Xing" is a little off base ~ you DON'T want to just weld bars between your frame rails that make an actual X as such ~ that is a Waste of time and money !

By doing that you will still get quite a bit of Flex in the chassis ~ which is what you are trying to Stop from happening by "Xing" your frame for strenght ! !

What you want to do is :

Weld an 1 1/2" or 1 3/4" tube from the Left rear of the frame to the right front of the frame. The idea is to weld it as far back on the left side(right before the frame brace that runs across in front of the rear end) as possible and as far forward on the right side as possible (about where the frame curves inward)

The second tube welds straight across from frame rail to frame rail about 1/3 of the way back on the chassis.

If done correctly the two tubes will intersect a couple inches from(to the right of) where your stock Tranny mount is !

Then all you do is weld a piece of flat stock on the front side of the second piece and you have a Solid Tranny mount !

There is a very good article in last years(about this time) Circle track mag. that gives step-by-step instructions on how to do this ~ along with reasons why this method is better than an actual "X" in the frame!

I will see if i can find the exact issue and let you know which it is ! !

We followed the article step-by-step when doing my chassis and it turned out great !

**** A word of caution tho ~ Depending on which Headers you use ~ You Must watch where your bars weld in, because After we finished mine, we found out that my right header(conventional) dumped right in front of one of the bars ! As long as you know about his possible problem you can avoid it when you "X" the frame ~ we had to go with another type of header than we wanted to run in the beginning ! ********
